Abstract: Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase (P5CS) is an important regulatory factor in synthesis of proline, an osmotic regulator in plants. SgP5CS gene of Suaeda salsa was cloned and introduced into Arabidopsis, the related physiological indexes and drought tolerance were determined, and the function of SgP5CS gene and regulation mechanism under drought stress were studied. The results showed that Arabidopsis with SgP5CS overexpression had long roots, while the content of free proline increased significantly and content of malondialdehyde decreased after two weeks of drought stress. It was found that overexpression of SgP5CS gene could enhance drought tolerance of transgenic Arabidopsis. These results laid a foundation to further study the SgP5CS gene function in Suaeda glauca, which might provide reference for the drought resistance mechanism in plants.
