Abstract: Based on the ecological environment analysis according to the environmental investigation of the Yunzaobang River in Shanghai, we assessed the ecological suitability of land use in the area by combination of GIS and analytic hierarchy process. The results showed that the suitable, relatively suitable, unsuitable and relatively unsuitable areas were 27.1%, 15.1%, 32.0% and 25.8%, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of bank utilization rates on the ecological suitability was further discussed. The quality of the river water would be significantly improved if the natural degradation ability of the microbes in the substrate sludge and the two banks can be fully utilized. In order to reduce the influence of human activities on the ecosystem of the river bank, the stone\|laying of some river bank can be substituted by ecological brick material. Finally, the planning of “three river combination” for Yunzaobang River, Huangpu River and Yangtse River was proposed, which gives scientific support to the environmental treatment of Yunzaobang in Shanghai. Moreover, the assessment techniques can be used for the other similar area.
