Pesticide residues and dietary exposure risk assessment of Myrica rubra in Yuyao of China

Abstract:

To investigate the pesticide residue profiles and dietary exposure risks of Myrica rubra(Chinese bayberry) in major producing towns of Yuyao City during 2023-2024, pesticide residue analyses were conducted on fresh Chinese bayberry samples and pesticide inputs. Dietary exposure risk assessments were performed using point estimation and probabilistic assessment models, respectively. The results revealed that among 73 batches of fresh Chinese bayberry samples, a total of 19 pesticide residues were detected, including 13 unregistered pesticides. The overall pesticide detection rate was 74.0%, the off-label use rate was 68.4%, and the multi-residue detection rate was 39.7%. Point estimation results indicated that the acute and chronic dietary exposure risks ranged from 0.02% to 7.73% and 0.01% to 6.00%, respectively, demonstrating that the dietary exposure risk was within an acceptable range. Probabilistic assessment results showed that the dietary exposure risk was controllable for populations under 50 years of age, whereas high-percentile exposure levels may pose potential risks for the 50-74 age group. Collectively, this study indicated that the dietary exposure risk of pesticides in Chinese bayberry in Yuyao is generally acceptable; however, high-percentile exposure among middle-aged and elderly populations may present potential risks. It is recommended that pyraclostrobin, difenoconazole, and lambda-cyhalothrin should be prioritized for risk management.
