Effect of NaCl stress on growth and photosynthetic characteristics of eggplant seedlings

Abstract: Effects of different concentrations of NaCl on plant growth, photosynthetic characteristics, contents of proline and soluble sugar of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)seedlings of ‘Huqie 08\|11’ were studied. The results showed that with increasing NaCl concentration, the plant height, stem diameter, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight and contents of chlorophyll decreased, and net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci)and transpiration rate (Tr)decreased significantly; meanwhile, stomatal limitation value (Ls)increased obviously, water use efficiency (WUE)declined after an initial increase, and contents of proline and soluble sugar increased significantly. It was indicated that the growth and photosynthesis of eggplant were inhibited under NaCl stress, and the declined photosynthetic rate was due to stomatal limitation.
